Yes, I know about the enable brightness in rgb mode bit in SPCB, the ov6650 has 
it too, and I was thinking about the same lines as you (maybe some bit enables 
the controls) but I haven't been able to find anything in the ov7630 datasheet.

Time to rip out the controls again I guess, ah well it was worth a try :)
