Is plain `ls` fast?

Are you using root on the server and some other user on the client?

I dont think it applies to your situation, but had a very similar situation
years ago.

  `ls` ... very fast

  `ls  -la` ... very very very slow

The filesystem was connected to MS Active Directory (maybe via likewise)
and was doing the permissions lookup for user,group,other  rwxrwxtwx for
each of the groups the current user was a member of by querying AD each
time.
