No dice :( removed as suggested updated unit file looks like this

"Type=notify" can not work until systemd-support was successful built which does not seem to be the case looking at the starting posts!

[Unit]
Description=KKonnect KHIPU-NETWORKS Service
After=syslog.target network.target

[Service]
Environment=KRB5CCNAME=FILE:/run/samba/krb5cc_samba
Type=notify
NotifyAccess=all
ExecStart=/usr/local/samba/sbin/winbindd
ExecReload=/usr/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
LimitCORE=infinity

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

I had lifted the unit file from an rpm install of samba from fedora.

Thanks
Arnab

            NotifyAccess=all
            PIDFile=/var/run/samba/

        I know nothing about systemd, but, shouldn't there be something like
        'winbind.pid' on the end of the line above?

    there should be no PIDFile line at all - the whole point of
    Type=notify is a direct communication channel where a non-forking
    main-pid tells systemd "i am ready to accept connections"
