Not so. The things that have cost them market share is multi-fold. One,
loss to Google+Apple smartphone migration, not keeping up with core
browser technology dynamics (process models (Servo), crappy Flash
updating, quirky page rendering, &c) and wasted time on 10-% features,
to name but a few.

The continual cutting of options has cost them a lot of users. That did not stop with the landing of the Australis interface.

Agree but that was not the hill I chose my point to die on :-)

My point was the wisdom of spending significant resources adding more stuff that 10-% of the users would ever use or understand, not the additional cutting of existing options.
