It does no such thing ... null string is explicitly "".  You are defining 
it to represent nothing at all, and that is a violation of POSIX, as of
POSIX.1-1996 (SUSv2).  Your usage is long obsolete ... time you woke up 
to life in the 21st century, and updated it.
