I don't want to derail any useful discussion, which may arise out of
this, but could you please clarify what you mean by "the [libpng] that
comes with MinGW"?
AFAIK, there is no such thing. I do see a (rather ancient) mingwPORT
of libpng-1.2.8, hidden away here:
but that's a very much "build-it-yourself" offering, which is not, and
never has been formally supported by any MinGW.org developer; I would
hardly classify it as "the libpng that comes *with* MinGW".
