KDE version 1.x

I don't know how much interest there will be.

But for those who are interested in being able to see and use a piece of history, some of you may know that one of the KDE developers had done a bunch of work on KDE version 1 to be able to run it on a modern Linux system. There really aren't any instructions on getting it compiled and up and running however, and it's not entirely straightforward.

I wanted to see if anyone was interested in binaries so they can try it out for themselves without having to compile it. I've made a tarball with working 32-bit binaries including necessary libraries. I have not been able to get it working on a multilib system. If someone wants a set of 64-bit binaries I'd be happy to compile it as 64-bit. There are a few games working, as well as basic KDE1 utilities. I am working on updating other KDE1 applications. You must be running X.Org OR XFree86. I could package it as an RPM or DEB if there was enough interest.

I spent a bunch of time (over 2 weeks) getting it up and running. It DOES run on a Debian 8 system, and I have spent quite a bit of time running it to see how well it does.

Surprisingly it's quite stable for being as old as it is. I have not been able to get it to crash or hang yet. It's also blazing fast. However I can't say it's secure.

At any rate if you're interested, reply and I'll post a link to download the binaries, as well as some instructions on getting it up and running.

If you're interested in compiling it yourself, you can get the source code from either the official KDE Github mirror, or I also host the source code, along with additional libraries not on the official KDE mirror needed to compile and run it, on my own Github repository. If you need help compiling it I'll be happy to help where I can.
