High memory cost of single g_assert() call

I am quite puzzled to see that a single call to glib, g_assert() [1]
is paging in 488 kB [2] of memory for the text section of the library.
That seems to be way too much. What is the rationale behind this?

[1]
int main()
{
  volatile int i = 1;
  g_assert (i > 0);
  sleep (9999);
  return 0;
}
