It sounds like pkg-config is picking up the old .pc file. Depending on
where you installed the newer version you might have to set the
PKG_CONFIG_PATH variable so that it picks it up instead of the old
version.

It might also be a good idea to take a look at jhbuild which automates
all of this and makes it very simple to build and install a new copy
without interfering with system components.
