The hardware doesn't know IP addresses. The kernel knows those.

$ ip -6 a show eth0
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 state UP

    inet6 2001:470:1e07:ff7:d63d:7eff:fe93:e318/64 scope global
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever

$ ip -6 r show | grep eth0
