I configured modesetting as driver:

# cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
Section "Device"
  Identifier "AMD"
  Driver "modesetting"

It is used now:

# inxi -GxxSM
System: Host: schmiede Kernel: 3.16.0-6-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit gcc:
4.9.2) Desktop: Awesome 4.0 dm: lightdm
           Distro: Debian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)

GLX Version: 3.1 Mesa 18.2.8 Direct Rendering: Yes

But my machine is still rebooting hard with kernels higher than 3.16.

Any other ideas?
