One of the steps is 'lsusb'; does your scanner show. Another step is to
use 'sane-find-scanner'; is the device detected?
Please post the outputs of 'ls -l /dev/sg*' and 'ls -l /dev/bus/usb/*/*'.
Both done as a user.
