That's really weird. Are there any particular configure scripts that
show this? What shell are you using?
In terms of debugging it, I'd try using "bash -x ./configure" and see
what that says. Maybe "strace -f -o logfile ./configure" to see what
it's doing. Both will produce a lot of output...
