If you don't want to use "shell", you can:
c:/cygwin/bin/cygpath -w $(c:/cygwin/bin/getent passwd $env:USERNAME | c:/cygwin/bin/cut -d: -f6)
but I'm not sure if you think this is "awkward" as well.
